From an ancient city split in two by the Rhine, Danito & Athina have risen majestically out of their Cologne home with a distinctive sound that has captured the hearts and minds of fans and peers alike. Describing themselves as ‘connected souls tuned as one’, the charismatic German pair now make their debut on Darin Epsilon’s imprint Perspectives Digital with the magnificent ‘Pontos’ EP.
Weaving a magical spell for over two decades, Danito has found his predominantly techno and tech-based work signed to a host of high profile imprints. Partners for several years, Athina adds another dimension to the pair’s work as a respectable producer and singer/songwriter in her own right. No better is this musical alchemy illustrated than on a host of prestigious imprints that include Stil Vor Talent, Crossfrontier Audio, and Plattenbank, supported by a DJ elite that includes Solomun, Hernan Cattaneo, and Oliver Koletzki.
PERSPECTIVES DEBUT
Now debuting on Perspectives, ‘Pontos’ is a wonderfully crafted track whose intricate percussive groove combines organic elements with strong, evolving rhythms. A dynamic bassline plays a central role and a shimmering arpeggio pans slowly across the stereo spectrum to add a delicious melodic layer. Modulated pads and a counterpoint lead impress further. Partner track ‘Satori’ retains the same rhythmic prowess as its predecessor. A melodic collage sits atop with pin-sharp precision as subtle motifs and chord progressions play off each other to sublime effect. The result is a track that evolves delicately to an imperceptible zenith by the latter stages.
THE REMIX
Accompanied by a single remix, two icons of the underground dance scene join forces to rework the lead track ‘Pontos’. The combined portfolio of famed Spanish producer, D-Formation, and legendary French producer, Rick Pier O’Neil, is in the thousands and features on such leading labels as Suara, Toolroom, Yoshitoshi, Platipus, and Sony. The duo return to PerspectivesDigital after remixing ‘That Vibe’ by Roger Martinez, which went on to become one of the label’s highest-selling tracks of 2016. Their remix of ‘Pontos’ is a dynamic, growling affair that immediately shows its dancefloor credentials with a heavy techno beat and shuffling hi-hat percussion. Using the bassline theme so resonant in the original as a central pillar, D-Formation& RPO’s remix erupts wi th a huge searing lead line that cuts through the mix like an acetylene torch through steel. Pausing for breath at the midpoint, the LFO siren of the original is used to create a rousing crescendo for the track’s denouement to play out in electrifying fashion as rhythm and melody combine in glorious harmony.
